  1. 01

    Connect to a network

Wi-Fi or your existing cellular data — anything that gives you a working internet connection. You need it once, just for the eSIM profile download.

  2. 02

    Open Settings → Cellular

Tap "Add eSIM" (or "Add Cellular Plan" on older iOS). You'll see two options: scan QR or enter details manually.

  3. 03

    Scan the QR code

Point your camera at the QR code the provider emailed you. iOS reads it automatically — you don't need to take a photo first. Tap "Enter Details Manually" instead if you only have the activation code.

  4. 04

    Follow the on-screen instructions

iOS handles the rest — verifying the plan, downloading the profile, prompting you to name and confirm it (~10–30 seconds total). Name it something memorable like "Japan May 2026" rather than the default "Secondary".

  5. 05

    Choose default line

iOS asks which line to use for calls, messages, and data. For travel: keep your home line for iMessage/SMS, set the new eSIM as Cellular Data.

iPad: same steps as iPhone — Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM.

Pro tip.

Install the eSIM before you fly, but leave it toggled off until you land. That way you save the precious airport Wi-Fi minutes for actually using the internet.

Something went wrong?

The six things travelers actually run into — and how to fix them in under a minute.

Make sure the QR code fills the viewfinder and is well-lit. If it still won't scan, use manual entry instead — your provider's confirmation email has the SM-DP+ address and activation code.

Apple Watch: tether to your iPhone via Bluetooth; travel eSIMs can't be used directly on Watch.
